When I started out in network marketing it was all a bit different from my “day” job as a quantity surveyor (construction cost consultant if you are in the USA) and I made a few, OK a lot of, mistakes but as time has gone by I’ve learnt from these mistakes and have come to realise that network marketing is much like running a quantity surveying business, or indeed any other kind of business. Obviously the “product” is different but the basic principles are the same and can be summarised in the following four tips, which I’ve set out for network marketing.
Network marketing tip # 1
Set your own goals – Everybody you know has some kind of goal, whether it’s just to get through the day without shouting at someone or to win an Olympic gold medal! The trick is to know how to achieve that goal. With these two examples I guess for one you would have to count to ten a lot and for the other train constantly for years! But for both of these you would have to break them down into two categories – short and long term. Short term for one would be don’t shout at anyone for a day and for the other to achieve a specific time within say a month. Long term would be don’t shout at anyone for a month and achieve a personal best time in 6 months. Network marketing is no different. Your long term goal is obviously to sponsor as many people into your company as possible. It doesn’t really matter what your long term number is (obviously the higher the better) but this long term goal then can be broken down into short term goals of x numbers per day or week or month. This gives you a clearer picture of whereyou are going and of how many people you have to talk to per day, week or month in order to achieve your long term goal.
Network marketing tip # 2
Be realistic about the work required. Too many people come into network marketing thinking that it is some kind of get rich quick thing that only requires the minimum amount of effort before the money starts rolling in. How wrong is that?! The benefits of working in network marketing can be so much better than being a faceless employee but, lets face it, it does take work. If you were to invest all your money plus some from a bank into a business venture would you just work at making it a success for a few hours a week? No chance! You would work your socks off to make sure it was a success. You need the same mindset with a network marketing business that is you are going to work at it every day for as long as you can! Don’t worry, it will get easier and if you have the correct mindset the hours required will soon drop!
Network marketing tip # 3
You should focus on making money at all times. The most important thing in any business is making money and MLM is no different. The things that make you money are marketing, sponsoring people and selling your product or opportunity. Checking your emails or Facebook every ten minutes certainly does not fall into that category and it could be argued that it should be last on your list every day. Having said that you could be waiting on an important email so need to keep checking. Have another tip here – If they say they are going to send an email straight away and it takes hours to arrive don’t drop everything to reply. It probably means that the person you are dealing with is focused on making money and isn’t checking or sending emails every ten minutes!! Try and get into the habit of having a quick look at your emails first thing, taking a note of the ones you need to reply to and then going onto your money making activities before responding.
Network marketing tip # 4
Use the internet. Many people you will talk to about network marketing are “old school” and are of the opinion that you can only achieve success in network marketing by getting lists of leads and either talking to the people face to face or phoning them up. It didn’t take me too long to realise that the “old school methods” of building any network marketing business was not only very time consuming but also on the way out. Working the phone with lists will still show some results but the uptake is pretty low and it does limit you in the number of people you can contact. After months of phoning and talking to people, and getting virtually no response from 99% of them, I began to realise that there had to a better way.
The turning point for me was when I wanted to sell a cylinder head for an old Jaguar which had been lying in the garage for about 15 years. I was going to put it in eBay which would have limited it to here in the UK but decided to try a couple of specialist Jaguar websites instead. Within 24 hours I had over 30 replies from here in the UK, all over Europe, USA, Canada and Australia! Sold it in 48 hours to someone who came over from France for it and got about 4 times what I thought I’d get. And all for a free advert!!
Now it didn’t take much thought to think that the principle could be applied to network marketing. The “list system” would be like advertising on eBay and would have limited me to the UK while some kind of internet based system could be like using the specialist Jaguar websites and literally give a potential worldwide customer base! And provided you can come up with good powerful “adverts” for your product it does away with the frustration of phoning and chasing people to explain what your product or opportunity is all about only to be rejected.
I hope that these tips will be of some use to you regardless of whether you are new to network marketing or have been at it for a while and feel that you are going nowhere.
